Salameh Kayleh is a Syrian Marxist intellectual of Palestinian origin. He spent several years imprisoned by the dictatorship of Bashar al Assad. Arrested again in April 2012 and then deported to Jordan. In the World Social Forum (WSF) in Tunisia, conducted in late March, Kayleh attended the workshop in favour of the Syrian revolution organized by IWU-FI. There, together with other organizations, it was decided to convene an international meeting to support the revolution in Syria on 11 and 12 July in Istanbul, Turkey. In recent weeks a number of battles in the north of the country and in towns close to Damascus, would show that Assad forces are losing ground again.

Call to solidarity with the Syrian revolution and the Kurdish people

ENGLISH - NEWS & DOCUMENTS

We call on the international left organizations, on the solidarity movements to make their voices heard in solidarity with the struggle of the Syrian people and the Kurdish people.March 15 marks four years of the popular uprising against the regime of Bashar al-Assad. Two hundred thousand dead, towns and villages destroyed, more than seven million displaced, and another three million refugees abroad, is the balance of this bloodthirsty regime that has not hesitated to use the entire deadly arsenal against its peoples to remain in power.

The intervention of Russia and Iran providing weapons to the regime, together with direct military intervention by Hezbollah, have been instrumental in changing the course of the military front giving the regime military supremacy. But the popular resistance in Aleppo and other cities demonstrates the will and determination of the popular uprising, and prevents the regime to complete the defeat.

The regime encouraged the formation of ISIS, emptying the prisons of Islamists prisoners.

Triumph of the left in Greece! Only the non-payment of the debt and the break with the EU, the Troika, the IMF and their adjustment can provide a solution to the workers and youth!

ENGLISH - NEWS & DOCUMENTS

Without a break with the Troika, the EU and the debt payments, there will be no solution for the workers and youth of Greece. In the elections of 25 January the left has triumphed. Syriza and its leader Alexis Tsipras have achieved 36.6 percent of the vote, with 2,246,064 votes. The ruling party New Democracy, conservative, defeated reached 27.8 percent. The triumph of the left is a very important fact that impacts on all workers and European youth. And also on the peoples of the world who for decades have been struggling and facing the adjustments and cutbacks of the bosses' governments, agents of imperialism and the IMF. Moreover when many took the left for dead and in some European elections there is the threat of the progress of the vote of the extreme right, type Marine Le Pen and the National Front in France or the Greek neo Nazi formation Golden Dawn.

On the reestablishment of diplomatic relations between the USA and Cuba

ENGLISH - NEWS & DOCUMENTS

Our revolutionary socialist current has always defended the socialist gains of the Cuban revolution of 1959, has repudiated all forms of imperialist aggression against Cuba, including the economic blockade and embargo. But we have always been critical of Cuba’s political leadership who was abandoning the socialist banner of the glorious era of Che Guevara

Statement by the IWU–FI

The announcement of the reestablishment of diplomatic relations, conducted jointly by Barak Obama and Raul Castro, after more than 50 years of rupture and US blockade has caused a logical impact on the world. This is an important fact about which all kinds of interpretations for the reasons for this change and its scope have opened.
Although it is a partial measure, since the historical blockade has not been raised yet, the mere fact that a USA president finally acknowledges, as Obama had to do, that after more than 50 years of rupture of relations and blockade to Cuba “have failed” means a political victory for the Cuban people and the peoples of the world who have fought for decades repudiating these reprisals of imperialism. Together with this, it is a welcome fact the release of Cuban prisoners part of the so-called “Five Heroes” (two had been released long ago), who had been for over 15 years in an US prison and were a claim of peoples and the left of the world. Therefore, as socialists, we reject Raul Castro thanking the Pope and congratulating Obama for this political setback. It was the struggle of more than 50 years of the peoples of Cuba and the world who achieved this political defeat of imperialism.

Syria: ¡Solidarity with the 4 Douma kidnapped activists!

ENGLISH - NEWS & DOCUMENTS

We join and call to support the global campaign against the kidnapping of Samira al-Khalil, Razan Zeitoona, Wael Hammada, and Nazem Hammadi, carried out against al-Assad opposition activists who were unarmed.

We adhere to the global campaign for the abducted Syrian fighters

We join and call to support the global campaign against the kidnapping of Samira al-Khalil (*), Razan Zeitoona, Wael Hammada, and Nazem Hammadi, carried out against al-Assad opposition activists who were unarmed. About the kidnappers all indications intersect with the group of "Jaish Al-Islam" (Islam Army) and their leaders who have effective authority in Douma.

In Syria the struggle begun in 2011 to end the criminal dictatorship of Bashar al-Assad has produced thousands murdered by the regime as well as thousands missing and displaced.

Solidarity with the Kurdish people resistance in Kobani!

ENGLISH - NEWS & DOCUMENTS

The city of Kobani, with a population predominantly Kurdish in northern Syria, had been controlled by the Kurdish people through the process of popular rebellion started in 2011 against the dictatorship of Bashar al-Assad.

The city of Kobani, with a population predominantly Kurdish in northern Syria, had been controlled by the Kurdish people through the process of popular rebellion started in 2011 against the dictatorship of Bashar al-Assad. And since then they have been exercising their self-government defended by the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG). For some weeks now Kobani is being attacked by the reactionary forces of the Islamic State (ISIS) with the complicity of the Turkish government, which has blocked the entry of humanitarian aid, weapons and Kurdish fighters of Turkey to fight alongside their Syrian brothers, who are exposed to a slaughter.

Turkey is part of the "international coalition" headed by the United States, with support from the European powers and the Arab monarchies, which has only militarily faced the Islamic State when this has threatened their interests. For two years ISIS has massacred the peoples of Syria as a fifth column of the revolution, with the blessing of al-Assad's regime. It was not until its expansion into Iraq (see IWU-FI statement of 28 August 2014), when ISIS put in check the regime imposed by the US on its withdrawal, that this coalition was organized. Far from any humanitarian purpose, the imperialist intervention in Iraq, and later in Syria, only seeks to stabilize the hated regimes in Baghdad and Damascus. As we said in August, only the people of Syria and Iraq will get rid of the Islamic State and these regimes which have created the breeding ground for the expansion of the self-styled "caliphate". We therefore condemn the imperialist intervention and affirm that it does nothing for those in Syria and Iraq fighting for peoples' rights of and social justice.

Turkey has joined the coalition, but it is reluctant to intervene militarily in Syria, first because it is not willing to do the dirty work on land while Obama avoids sending more soldiers to die in the region. For years, the Turkish government has allowed the development of ISIS and has kept Kobani under a blockade to weaken the Kurdish movement.

Why did the ISIS attack Kobanê?

ENGLISH - NEWS & DOCUMENTS

By Hakkı Yükselen - IDP - Turkey"Estamos en contra de todo tipo de intervenciones imperialistas no importa cuales son, o podrían ser sus razones. Incluso si el objetivo es destruir ISIS"

There is not an easy explanation for it. The answer could be the following if we were to disregard the much deeper strategic, political and "divine" reasons: to unite the ISIS-dominated areas by capturing the Rojava (West Kurdistan in Kurdish, Kurdistan of Syria)cantons, which constitute a physical disconnection between these areas — the districts and the cities in the north; and to get to Aleppo, the economic centre of Syria, from the north by capturing the westernmost Afrin after Kobanê. Yet another motive could be to capture Cizre that is located at the far east of Syria and that has an important oil field (Rimela), which would allow ISIS to both get all the oil fields under its dominance and toguarantee a continuous supply of military, organizational and logistic needs as the entire border with the Republic of Turkey would then be under their control.

Stop US attacks on Iraq and Syria!

ENGLISH - NEWS & DOCUMENTS

Only the people can defeat ISIS and end with these hated regimes!Only the people can defeat ISIS and end with these hated regimes!

Since some weeks ago the government of the US, by order of Obama, has started a military intervention on Iraq bombing zones occupied by the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) with the argument of "protecting US Citizens" and to develop "humanitarian actions" defending the Christian and Yazidi communities threatened by ISIS. Now Obama announces he would proceed with a possible bombing of Syria, in agreement with the dictator Bashar al-Assad, with the same argument of "the battle against terrorism".

The cost of neoliberalism:Soma massacre in Turkey

ENGLISH - NEWS & DOCUMENTS

THE COST OF NEOLIBERALISM: SOMA MASSACRE IN TURKEY

Workers' Democracy Party, 17 May 2014

On Tuesday, May 13, hundreds of miners got trapped underground following a fire at a coalmine belonging to Soma Holding in Soma, a small town of 100,000 inhabitants in the city of Manisa in western Turkey, whose economy is primarily based on the mining industry. The rescue operation came to an end as of Saturday, May 17, and Energy and Natural Resources Minister Taner Yıldız declared the final death toll to be 301 miners.

Even though the rescue operation ended, the fact that there are dozens of mining families who are still waiting in front of the mine or the hospital morgue with the hope to get information about their missing ones says otherwise. The contradiction between the official number of deaths declared by the government and the number of miners that are still missing suggests that the actual death toll reaches up to over 400 miners and that Minister Yildiz minimizes the number in order to cover up the actual gravity of the disaster. This only points out to the presence of temporary and subcontracted workers, who had been illegally employed by Soma Holding in the mine, during the disaster.
