Despite the repression in Egypt, the March for Palestine had a major global dimension

Organisations from Arab countries, Europe and around the world have called for a march to Rafah, on Gaza’s border with Egypt, for the 15th of June, as well as for protests and marches across the world to demand an end to the blockade on food and water entering Gaza, and an end to the genocide perpetrated by Israel, with the armed support of the US and other European imperialists. Over the course of the last 20 months, Israel’s invasion of Gaza has killed more than 55,000 people and is now causing a famine.

Last Friday, thousands of people, from 50 countries, arrived in Cairo for the march, where thousands of Egyptians were also expected to take part. Many came from other Arab countries in North Africa. The Egyptian authorities however, complicit with Israel, blocked the demonstrators. This began with them ignoring the requests of the authorization of the march itself, followed by the arrest and brutal repression of the demonstrators who had already gathered in Ismailia (100 kilometres from Cairo) to start the march, beating them as they confiscated their passports. They then expelled the foreigners taking part in the march from Egypt.

The participants were arrested and deported to their countries of origin. Israel, with the support of the US and complicit Arab governments such as Egypt, managed to prevent the march from reaching the Gaza border. Furthermore, on June 9th, Israeli soldiers intercepted the Freedom Flotilla, carrying Swedish activist Greta Thunberg and transporting humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip. This wasn’t enough however to stop a huge worldwide mobilisation against Zionist Israel and in support of the Palestinian people. Last week, demonstrations in solidarity with Palestine and in support of the global march against the genocide in Gaza took place all over the world.

In Spain, there were mass demonstrations in Barcelona, Madrid and 120 other cities. In Amsterdam, the Netherlands, 150,000 people took to the streets dressed in red and carrying Palestinian flags. Similarly, in Brussels, Belgium, 100,000 people took to the streets. There were also large marches in Italy, Germany, France, Great Britain and other European countries. New marches for Palestine also took place in the United States. Among the demands of these marches is the immediate cessation of arms shipments to Israel from the United States and Europe.

There were also large marches in Africa, the Middle East, Asia and almost every country in Latin America; In Argentina, Mexico, Venezuela, Brazil, Bolivia, and in Chile, with over 15,000 people, demanding the immediate severance of all relations with Israel.

From the IWU-FI, we are fighting for an immediate ceasefire, the withdrawal of all Israeli troops from Gaza, the West Bank, Syria and Lebanon, and an end to the current criminal aggression against Iran, as well as for the release of all those detained by the Egyptian government. We are in favour of supporting the heroic Palestinian resistance, for a single, secular, democratic and non-racist Palestine: free Palestine from the river to the sea!
From the IWU-FI, we were part of the call for this important world march and we participated actively. We are in favour of continuing this unity of international struggle for aid to Gaza, we demand that the Egyptian government stop the repression and allow aid to reach Gaza, against the genocide promoted by Trump and Netanyahu.
