On February 28, the world watched in shock as the scandalous confrontation between the president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, and Donald Trump in the Oval Office of the White House.

Something unprecedented happened in the world context. An far-right and fascist like Trump, unbridled like a “sheriff,” giving his approval to another far-right like Putin. Shamelessly showing that they want Ukraine and its people to surrender and hand over 20 percent of their territory to Russia, as well as their mining and energy resources.

The American vice president J.D. Vance, who said he was being “disrespectful” towards the Americans, and that he should rather than Trump, started the ambush against Zelensky.

Zelensky’s US visit aimed to secure a deal with Trump on Ukrainian resources. The press conference they offered, however, had a tense ending, in which they came to shouting and Trump even told Zelensky to shut up. Finally, he had no other choice but to get up and leave the United States without signing the agreement that Trump wanted.

Trump clearly sided with Putin and Russian imperialism, humiliating Zelensky and the Ukrainian people.

Since 2022, when the Russian army crossed the border with Ukraine, both the European Union and the United States have had a lukewarm position in the face of Putin’s aggression. First, Biden and Macron tried to get Zelensky to leave the country and surrender, but when he refused, they simply provided Ukraine with defensive weapons; they never wanted to provide them with the latest generation of planes or tanks. The goal of European and US imperialism was never the defeat of Russia, but to reach a negotiation favourable to the interests of American imperialism.

Now Trump is making a 180-degree turn, and is aggressively moving towards an agreement with Putin, without taking Europe into account. He aims to politically and economically control Ukraine, seizing 20 per cent plus Crimea. Meanwhile, the United States would keep the “rare earths”, minerals of great importance for the development of new technologies, as well as Ukrainian oil and gas. An imperialist distribution in the style of the 19th century, like many others that have occurred in history at the expense of the people.

For three years, Zelensky’s government has favoured imperialism and Ukraine’s oligarchs, harming its people.

We support Ukraine’s struggle against Russia and its imperialist plans, separate from Zelensky.

We oppose Trump’s support for Putin and Israel’s actions in Gaza.

Trump joins Netanyahu and his fascist ministers in promoting the policy of displacing the Palestinian population to Arab countries, such as Egypt and Jordan. He cynically said that they would turn Gaza into the Middle East Riviera, referring to the French Riviera, a seaside resort, and the summer destination for the world’s millionaires. Trump released an aberrant video with images of himself and Netanyahu on a supposed beach in Gaza.

Hundreds of thousands of Gazans returned home, defying Trump.

We call for the broadest unity to mobilise throughout the world, in repudiation of Trump and to support the Ukrainian people and the heroic resistance of the Palestinian people.

By Miguel Angel Hernandez, leader of the FSP of Venezuela and the IWU-FI 3/3/2025.
