{"id":21152,"date":"2025-03-17T17:55:38","date_gmt":"2025-03-17T17:55:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/uit-ci.org\/?p=21152"},"modified":"2025-03-17T17:55:38","modified_gmt":"2025-03-17T17:55:38","slug":"panama-trade-unions-call-general-strike-for-21st-march","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uit-ci.org\/index.php\/2025\/03\/17\/panama-trade-unions-call-general-strike-for-21st-march\/?lang=en","title":{"rendered":"Panama: Trade unions call general strike for 21st March"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><i>By Propuesta Socialista, IWU-FI section in Panama<\/i><\/div>\n<div><i>\u00a0<\/i><\/div>\n<div><i>Against law that privatises social security and other anti-worker, anti-democratic and pro-imperialist measures of Mulino!<\/i><\/div>\n<p>Last Saturday, March 15th, a representative meeting of trade unions, and popular and youth organisations took place in Panama City against Law 163, passed during the third debate in the National Assembly, and promoted by the ultra-right and pro-imperialist government of Jos\u00e9 Ra\u00fal Mulino.<br \/>\nThe aim of this instrument is to privatise the Social Security Fund, within the framework of the anti-worker and anti-popular adjustment that the Mulino government intends to carry out.<br \/>\nThe meeting was convened by the\u00a0<i>Alianza Pueblo Unido<\/i>, and was held at the University of Panama. It was attended by<i>\u00a0Suntracs<\/i>, the banana union of Bocas del Toro, teachers\u2018 unions, the Panama Canal workers\u2019 union,\u00a0<i>National Council of Organised Workers<\/i>\u00a0(<i>Conato)<\/i>,\u00a0<i>Conusi<\/i>, peasant organisations of R\u00edo Indio, student and youth organisations such as\u00a0<i>Juventudes Revolucionarias<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>FER29<\/i>.\u00a0<i>Propuesta Socialista<\/i>\u00a0was alro present, represented through our comrade Priscilla V\u00e1squez, among other trade unions and popular organisations.<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0In a combative atmosphere, and with the slogans like \u2018this struggle does not belong to one, this struggle belongs to everyone, \u201cwe are patriots, not sellouts\u201d, \u201cthis fund is not for sale, this fund is defended\u201d, the leaders, activists and workers present agreed to hold a march on Tuesday 18th from 4 p.m., which will start from the Porras Park, the traditional meeting place for protests, and will go to the assembly of deputies. The meeting also agreed to call a general strike for Friday, March 21st. They also demanded that the government release the university students from the group\u00a0<i>Pensamiento y Acci\u00f3n Transformadora<\/i>\u00a0(PAT), detained by the national police.<br \/>\nThose present decided to continue the days of leafleting and picketing from Monday, until the march on Tuesday, which will be part of a national day that will be expressed through rallies and mobilisations in other cities such as Darien, Chiriqui, Bocas del Toro, among others.<br \/>\nThe participants in the meeting were emphatic in stating that they will defeat Law 163 in the streets, as well as the government&#8217;s intention to reopen the mine, in the hands of the transnational\u00a0<i>First Quantum<\/i>, despite a ruling by the Supreme Court of Justice that ordered its closure at the end of 2023.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0From Propuesta Socialist, we will be accompanying all the activities approved by the meeting and promoting all these struggles in unity, as was raised at the event last Saturday.<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Propuesta Socialista, IWU-FI section in Panama \u00a0 Against law that privatises social security and other anti-worker, anti-democratic and pro-imperialist measures of Mulino!
