From 4 to 7 September, the Socialism 2026 Conference was held in Chicago, organised by Haymarket Books, one of the most recognised independent and left-wing publishers in the United States. More than 90 human rights, social, cultural, feminist, socio-environmental, and left-wing political organisations supported the event that brought together thousands of activists.

The IWU-FI took part in the conference with Mercedes Trimarchi, a leader and elected representative for the city of Buenos Aires, representing the Socialist Left (IS) within the Left Front (FIT-U), Argentina, and Simón Rodríguez, a founder of the Socialism and Freedom Party (PSL) of Venezuela.

For four days, over one hundred meetings, workshops, panels, talks, and conferences took place simultaneously. These events addressed some of the main debates facing the left and social movements in the United States and internationally.

Angela Davis, Socialism, and the Communist Manifesto

The opening plenary session was led by the renowned feminist and anti-racist activist Angela Davis, author of, among other books, Women, Race, and Class. Interviewed by academic Naomi Murakawa, Davis participated in the panel «Freedom is a Constant Struggle: Palestine, Internationalism, Abolition.» One of the central points of her presentation was the need to build an alternative to capitalism to face the multiple crises the world is experiencing. Davis argued that socialism is the only viable future and called for a return to the tools of Marxism to intervene in current struggles. She concluded her presentation by advocating for the reading of Karl Marx’s Communist Manifesto, not as a text of the past, but as a tool for anti-capitalist action in the present.

Another key theme that ran through the discussions was the fight against Donald Trump’s policies, particularly the persecution and criminalisation of migrants. Various activities included sharing experiences of resistance against the actions of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The IWU-FI Delegation and its Activities

During the meeting, the IWU-FI joined in various activities, debates, and exchanges with sectors of the North American left. Trimarchi shared her experience in Bolivia and outlined the challenges facing the Left Front in relation to the government of Javier Milei, a Trump ally in the region.

Trimarchi junto a Aber Kawas, candidata a senadora de la DSA, por el estado de Nueva York.
