21 September 2022. The world protest or “climate strike” called by Fridays for Future will be held this Friday 23 September. This movement started in 2018 headed by teenager Greta Thunberg, 15, who camped outside the Swedish Parliament, demanding urgent measures to lower carbon emissions to stop climate change. It became the “climate strike” in which four million students and people around the world took to the streets in 2019. This strike is held in September every year.
They also denounce the UN climate summits as a scam, as they cannot ensure compliance with the very few resolutions they take. In fact, carbon dioxide emissions from fossil oil, which should be down to 45 per cent by 2030 to avoid catastrophic global warming, are increasing.
And now, with the excuse that there is less gas in Europe because of the war in Ukraine, they are once again producing coal, which is the worst pollutant. And they have increased the production of armaments, which is another huge energy expense.
This European summer was the worst in terms of temperature increase in over 70 years, droughts, and forest fires. In Latin America, we are also facing forest fires and droughts. And the perspective is that this will continue to worsen if the use of oil, coal, gas, or biofuels (vegetables transformed into petrol) is not reduced.
The International Workers’ Unity – Fourth International (IWU-FI) considers that capitalism is destroying life in the world. Capitalists and their governments have a zero interest in renewable energy because it would affect their profits. That is why to prevent this disaster we have to put an end to the capitalist-imperialist system by achieving governments of the working class, the youth, and the popular sectors that expropriate the mining, agribusiness, and oil multinationals and plan the economy democratically based on the needs of the people and that combat climate change and environmental destruction.
On this strategic path, only the international mobilisation of the youth and of the working and oppressed peoples can impose real energy changes that decisively reduce polluting fuels and counteract the ongoing environmental destruction.
For this reason, the “climate strike” called for Friday 23 September is totally justified and necessary and we give it our full support from the IWU-FI. We call everyone to take part in the mobilisations and joint actions in each country.
