16 April 2025. Enes Karakaş, our comrade, member of the Workers’ Democracy Party of Turkey (IDP), section of the IWU-FI, and a student at Boğaziç University, was released on Wednesday, April 16. After 20 days of detention in Erdoğan’s prisons, the mobilisation demanding the release of all detainees has borne its first fruits with the release of Enes and others.
Hundreds are jailed for protesting Erdoğan’s authoritarian rule.
At the prison gates, minutes from regaining his freedom and surrounded by his comrades in struggle, Enes declared: “Hello everyone! Today my imprisonment ended due to the struggle for democratic rights in Turkey. 308 students were arrested for participating in this struggle. Many of our comrades had already been released. Today I was also released. Unfortunately, some of our comrades are still being held in detention, a situation that demands our urgent attention. The immediate release of these individuals is our unwavering demand, and we will not rest until it is met. We will never give up this struggle. I have been released and I will continue the struggle from where I left off. We will not allow the repressive regime that seeks to intervene from universities to municipalities!”
From the International Workers’ Unity–Fourth International (IWU-FI), we salute the leaders, personalities, and comrades who were actively involved in the international campaign we carried out demanding their freedom. We will continue mobilizing until we win the freedom of all those detained! Long live the struggle of the workers, youth, and people of Turkey against Erdoğan’s repression!
