2 July 2026. On June 24, Venezuela was struck by a devastating double earthquake. To date, nearly three thousand people have died, a number that will sadly continue to rise. More than ten thousand were injured, while 40,000 are missing, and thousands have lost their homes.
After more than a week of rescue efforts under the rubble, the critical situation could worsen with the emergence of diseases that could affect thousands of people.
The earthquake hit Venezuela amidst already precarious social conditions, including water shortages, chronic power outages, inadequate transportation, and a healthcare system in crisis due to the capitalist adjustment policies implemented by the government of Nicolás Maduro and Delcy Rodríguez. These policies have also led to the emigration of thousands of healthcare professionals, part of the more than seven million Venezuelans who have left the country amidst the dire economic situation.
Faced with this dramatic situation, the Venezuelan people require the utmost international solidarity. More than four thousand rescuers from around the world have arrived in Venezuela to assist with rescue efforts. In this new phase, support for those who have lost their homes and for the thousands living in temporary shelters must be paramount.
From the International Workers’ Unity – Fourth International (IWU-FI), we stand with the Venezuelan working people in this difficult time and pledge our support for the solidarity drive launched in Anzoátegui state by the Classist, Unitary, Revolutionary, and Autonomous Current (C-CURA), led by José Bodas, a leader of this current in the oil sector and general secretary of the United Federation of Oil Workers of Venezuela (FUTPV).
This is an independent campaign, separate from the government and all official institutions, that seeks to collect and store medical supplies, hygiene products, and food for the victims.
Every cent collected by the IWU-FI and each of its sections in the various countries where we have a presence will be centralized and sent to our comrades in the Socialism and Liberty Party (PSL) of Venezuela to be transformed into material aid for the most affected sectors during this time of crisis.
While we are promoting this international fundraising effort, we demand that, in order for Venezuela to sustainably confront this period of humanitarian crisis, it is essential that the United States return all the dollars that Trump has stolen from the Venezuelan people through the sale of their oil; and that it not pay the $240 billion in outstanding external debt, so that all the country’s resources can be dedicated to assisting those affected by the tragedy and rebuilding the destroyed homes and buildings.
We call on workers, youth, women, dissidents, and all people to support this campaign in support of the Venezuelan people.
To make your contribution: Get in touch with your comrades at the IWU-FI in each country to make your solidarity donation!
