It has been a great triumph of the anti-fascist movement in Greece and all of Europe. After 5 years of the trial, the Greek justice declared the neo-Nazi party, «Golden Dawn», as a criminal organisation and the sentence for its leaders is expected.
Golden Dawn had won seats in parliament in 2012, reaching 7 per cent of the votes. Amid the deep economic crisis in which Greece was plunged. It was part of the advance of the ultra-right sectors all over Europe. But then it deflated, and in the parliamentary elections of 2019 it fell to 2.93 per cent of the vote, losing all representation in parliament.
The judicial process began with the murder of an anti-fascist rapper, Pavlos Fyssasen, 34 years old, by a member of the organisation.
After a big fight of the anti-fascist movements, left organisations and the popular sectors, the justice condemned the ultra-right organisation and the 68 accused are expected to be sentenced, among them the leaders of Golden Dawn as Nikolaos Mijaloliakos.
During the sentencing, thousands were demonstrating and celebrating in the streets of Athens outside the building in response to the statement. Then they were repressed and dispersed by the security forces of the New Democracy government. The verdict of the jury marks the victory of the anti-fascist and left organisations and the popular sectors over the fight against Golden Dawn and clarifies that with the mobilisation and struggle, racist and xenophobic fascism can be defeated.
