13 January 2024. On Friday and Saturday, the US, and UK bombed Yemen, resulting in five deaths and several injured. The International Workers’ Unity-Fourth International categorically repudiates this new imperialist aggression, this time against the small nation of Yemen.
On Friday, they bombed Sana’a, and the cities of Sa’ada, Hodeida, and Taez. On Saturday, the bombing was even more extensive, hitting some 28 locations. Meanwhile, Joe Biden has said they will continue to strike targets in Yemen. The US and UK bombings are to support Israel and its brutal aggression in Gaza. Yemen is one of the few countries that has taken concrete steps to support the heroic Palestinian people.
Since 19 November, the Houthi movement in Yemen has targeted Israeli-flagged ships and others carrying goods to Israel, showing support for Palestinians and condemning the Gaza genocide.
Attacks on ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden have affected the Israeli economy and trade. Millions have rallied in solidarity with Palestinians in Israel. As part of the great worldwide movement of solidarity with Palestine that has been expressed in massive mobilisations in the United States, Canada, Europe and throughout the Middle East and North Africa.
The imperialist attacks in recent days by the US and the UK have been justified as “acts of self-defence”, and supported by Australia, Canada, Bahrain, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, and South Korea as “Operation Prosperity Guardian”. A multinational military alliance promoted by the US since December to stop the Houthi attacks on ships in the Red Sea.
The United States had difficulties in creating this coalition, since countries of the European Union that were initially going to take part, such as France, Italy, and Spain, later decided not to do so, a similar situation arose with allies of US imperialism in the Middle East, such as Egypt and Saudi Arabia.
The UN Security Council displayed double standards by urging Yemen to cease attacks on the Red Sea while neglecting the genocide in Gaza and the imperialist bombing of Yemen.
The actions of the Houthis in the Red Sea have caused some 2,000 ships to be diverted from that route, which accounts for about 12 per cent of world trade, causing delays in the delivery of goods and an increase in freight rates, affecting Israel’s trade. All this is in retaliation for the inhumane blockade maintained by the Zionist entity in the enclave of Gaza, preventing the entry of food, medicine and fuel.
From the International Workers’ Unity-Fourth International (IWU-FI), we reject the imperialist aggression against Yemen. We call on the people of the world to take on the streets against the Zionist genocide in Gaza and to support the Palestinian people who, after three months of relentless bombings in the Strip and continuous raids in the occupied West Bank, resist heroically the Zionist occupier backed by imperialism.
The IWU-FI calls on the people to demand that their governments break all economic, commercial, cultural and military agreements with Israel: No more arms shipments to Israel, no more US financial and military aid to the Zionist entity, no more imperialist bombardment of Yemen, no more US fleet near Israel and the Middle East! Let the people mobilised demand their governments, in particular the Arab governments, to break off relations with Israel, and support the Palestinian resistance with everything it needs.
