Argentina: We Call on the PTS Not to Divide the FIT-U at the May Day Rally

By Juan Carlos Giordano, National Deputy-elect for Socialist Left/FIT-Unity

11th April 2026. We are weeks away from 1st May, the International Day of Struggle for the world’s working class, where there will be rallies and demonstrations against the various capitalist governments. Argentina’s Left Front’s challenge is to stay the only political option for workers and youth against Milei. However, when the National Board of the Left Front began discussions to move forward with organising a FIT-U (Left Front-Unity) rally, the PTS national leadership surprised us by presenting a fait accompli: it will hold its own rally.

In a brief statement on Thursday, 2nd April, the PTS (Workers’ Party for Socialism) declared: “We are promoting a large, internationalist workers’ rally in Buenos Aires this 1st May. It will feature international speakers, leaders of struggles in Argentina, and our main political figures. That is why we cannot take part in a potential joint rally this year.” IS (Socialist Left) quickly responded: “We regret that you have decided not to hold a joint rally […] It is more important than ever to return to the FIT-U tradition of holding unified workers’ and socialist rallies on May 1st to continue presenting a class-based and internationalist alternative to the far right and Peronism. We urge you to reconsider this decision and that we urgently dedicate ourselves to organising a unified May 1st rally in Plaza de Mayo.”
On Monday, 6th April, the PTS regrettably reaffirmed its call for its own rally. This news will surely surprise even Myriam Bregman’s own supporters.

The PTS must reconsider its misguided policy

The PTS’s position is completely wrong from every angle. Why divide the Left Front on May Day in the face of a far-right government? What message is the PTS sending to the world’s activists who support internationalist struggles for Palestine by holding its own event instead of a joint one, especially when all the parties of the Left Front Unity are sending representatives to the Sumud 2026 Global Flotilla? Its position is even more misguided given the recent news showing the growth of the Trotskyist and revolutionary left in Argentina. A poll for the 2027 presidential elections revealed that Myriam Bregman would come in third with 11%. “A striking third place for the left,” noted Clarín on April 6th. This significant percentage demonstrates the ground gained by the Left Front Unity in the struggles and in parliament, with its leaders, political figures, and its fundamental anti-capitalist and socialist program. Milei’s decline and the complicit role of Peronism and the CGT are creating a space that is being capitalised on by the FIT-U. Never before has the Left Front achieved such recognition. Given this, instead of calling for a joint May Day event, the PTS went it alone and organised its own.

Myriam Bregman’s rise should be a factor of unity, not division, within the Left Front

The PTS prioritises its own party, taking advantage of the growing prominence of its leader, Myriam Bregman, to the detriment of the FIT Unidad. Any party can call for its own initiatives or events. But is it right to divide the Left Front on May Day? We consider it a grave mistake.

Provoking this division in the face of Milei’s government and all the pro-business factions, starting with Peronism and its union bureaucracy, not only harms the Left Front and the unity of the left that we have achieved, but also damages Bregman’s standing. She has become a recognised figure among thousands of left-sympathisers, even if they are not members of the parties that comprise it.

We in Socialist Left consider Myriam Bregman our leader of the Left Front Unity, and we also acknowledge her personal merits. But it is also important to point out that Bregman’s position is because of her being part of the broader left-wing unity achieved with the Left Front Unity.

We have always maintained that the Left Front is much more than the sum of the parties or figures that comprise it. No single party within the Left Front could have achieved its current standing on its own.

The Left Front, established in 2011, has made significant strides in militant trade unionism, women’s and LGBTQ+ movements, youth groups, and working-class and popular neighbourhoods over the past 15 years. It is even an example to the global left that deserves credit for having achieved the unity of Argentine Trotskyism and maintaining it over the years despite differences. It is therefore deeply troubling that the PTS is dividing the FIT-U on such a symbolic date to hold its own event.

For all these reasons, we call on Myriam Bregman’s followers to demand that the PTS national leadership reconsider its completely misguided position so that the Left Front can hold a joint rally this coming May Day in Mayo Square and throughout the country. This would be extremely beneficial in further strengthening this valuable political tool, not only for elections but also for the daily struggle in workplaces, schools, and working-class and popular neighbourhoods, in the fundamental fight we have to achieve a government of the working class and the people.
