On the Global Day for the Decriminalisation and Legalisation of Abortion, actions and mobilisations took place in Latin America and the world, demanding real access to safe and free abortion and its decriminalisation. IWU-FI women and their different sections were part of these actions.
The struggle for the decriminalisation of abortion, for its legalisation, and access to women’s health has gained substantial momentum since the rise of the fourth feminist wave. Countries such as Argentina won the legalisation of abortion less than a year ago, or in Mexico, where the government approved its decriminalisation. In Chile, they passed the bill to decriminalise abortion. All triumphs and achievements of women and dissidents’ demos for the right to decide about their bodies.
Read the IWU-FI statement “#28S Let’s keep on fighting around the world for the right to abortion and women’s health.”
But the battle for access to abortion won with legalisation, besides the struggle for legal abortion throughout Latin America. As in Venezuela, where women mobilised against the backdrop of Maduro’s capitalist dictatorship, to demand decriminalisation and legal abortion. In the Dominican Republic, where Abinader’s police repressed the feminist movement while camping for weeks in front of the Palace of Congress, where the deputies were discussing the Penal Code.
IWU-FI women were part of the actions that took place throughout Latin America (pictures), denouncing the capitalist governments and the churches which, together with the bosses’ parties and the most reactionary sectors, deny women’s and dissidents’ right to decide, but also apply fierce austerity plans that deepen the gender gap and women’s deprivation.
