By Trade Union and political leaders
We, the undersigned, wish to express our solidarity with the people and workers of Venezuela, immersed in a terrible social crisis, and who suffer a severe repression in recent protests against hunger and in defence of democratic rights.
Our solidarity with the venezuelan people and their struggles materialises in the rejection of the government of Nicolas Maduro, supported by the Armed Forces, which has killed over 120 people protesting against the hunger, the misery and the government.
We do not support the pro-American right wing opposition of MUD (Democratic Unity Roundtable). We repudiate all interference in Venezuela by European and American imperialism, headed today by Donald Trump.
Maduro has denounced a «coup plan» and a so called economic war, however, the real coup was applied by his government to the working people and the masses.
Moreover, Maduro uses a fraudulent National Constituent Assembly (ANC), with which it seeks to perpetuate himself in power indefinitely to continue securing business with domestic enterprises and multinationals at the expense of the people.
The government boasts that with the Constituent Assembly it has achieved «peace and tranquillity». But actually it has solved none of the problems that gave rise to the protests; inflation, scarcity, hunger and unemployment have worsened. Meanwhile, Maduro continues to pay the foreign debt. He recently announced that in two years he has paid US$65 billion, while drastically reducing imports, worsening the shortage of food and medicines.
The answer for the venezuelan people´s needs will not come through negotiations between Maduro, MUD and imperialism to continue applying one of the most terrible economic adjustment plans in the country’s history. The only possible way out will continue to be the struggle and the unified mobilisation to get rid of this government and its starvation and dictatorial policy. For this reason, we propose the organisation of a general strike to overthrow Maduro and impose a working-class alternative for the country.
In Venezuela, we express our support for all popular mobilisations aiming at this fundamental change and to impose a workers’ and people’s emergency economic plan. A plan to expropriate the multinationals and expel imperialism, to nationalize oil 100 percent for the Venezuelan people. A plan to stop paying foreign debt and use all these resources to provide food, health, education and jobs to working people. In this path, we support any unitary initiative that contributes to the construction of an independent socialist and of the workers´ political alternative.
